Gelcoat Repair & Restoration
Chalky, oxidized gelcoat is the other half of boat care, and the same crew handles it in the same shop.
Marine finishes 101 · Smithville Lake
Why Northland hulls go chalky, and why that isn’t fatal
A boat that lives around Smithville Lake takes abuse most cars never see. It sits uncovered on a trailer through Missouri summers, bakes at the dock, and picks up hard-water spots and scum lines every time it comes out of the water. A couple of seasons of that and the shine is gone.
It goes fast because gelcoat is the whole finish. It’s a colored resin layer bonded into the hull, with no clear coat over the top like your truck has. Sun breaks it down, the color dries out, and the shine turns to haze and then to the white powder that rubs off on your hand. We grade what’s left in four stages:
The good news: oxidation is a surface problem. Under that dead layer there’s usually healthy gelcoat with plenty of color left in it, and restoration is the craft of cutting the failed surface away and refining what’s underneath. That’s a different job from the wash, vinyl, and interior work covered on our boat detailing page. If the finish itself has gone flat, this is the page you want.
How we bring it back
Wet sanding, compounding, and the order that matters
Gelcoat restoration is a correction process run in stages, and the rule is simple: start with the least aggressive step that will actually do the job. Here’s how a typical hull runs.
Inspection and test spot
Every boat gets a walk-around and a test spot on the hull. Ten minutes on one small area shows how much correction the gelcoat needs and how the finish will come back. You’ll know what we can and can’t fix before we start.
Wash and decontamination
Scum lines, mineral deposits, and years of old wax come off before any machine touches the hull. Compounding over that grit just grinds it back into the gelcoat, so the boat gets cleaned properly first.
Wet sanding, only when it’s earned
For heavy chalk and porous surfaces, fine-grit wet sanding levels the failed gelcoat faster and cleaner than compounding alone. Because sanding removes material on purpose, we use it only where compounding won’t get there, never as a default.
Compound, refine, protect
Marine compound and a machine polisher cut off the dead layer and pull the original color back. Finer polishes then clear the haze compounding leaves, until the gloss goes deep on the sides, the transom, anywhere gelcoat shows. Bare gelcoat fades in the sun, so we seal it.
Restorations run at our shop in downtown Smithville, minutes from the lake. We can also work on-site through our mobile detailing service, depending on access and the job. Ask when you book.
Keep the gloss
Seal it, or do it again in two summers
Restoration strips the old protection off along with the oxidation, which leaves that fresh, glossy surface with nothing between it and the same sun that killed the last finish. A quality marine wax buys you months. A marine ceramic coating buys you seasons.
We coat hulls with Triton, starting at $50 per linear foot, and decks with Theseus, starting at $20 per linear foot. Final pricing comes after we look at the boat. It’s the same logic as paint correction on a car: cut it clean once, then lock it in. Add a full boat detail and the vinyl, metal, and glass come back at the same time.
